Why Preparing for a Customs Audit Matters
HMRC can review your customs declarations after the goods have cleared. It can ask for your invoices, proof of payment, transport documents and origin evidence, and it can visit your premises. Where it finds errors, you can owe duty and import VAT, plus interest and penalties. Using a broker or freight forwarder does not remove your responsibility. HMRC can pursue the importer, and relying on an agent is not accepted as a reasonable excuse where their conduct caused the error. Small errors repeat across every shipment, so the total can be large. This course shows you what HMRC looks at, how to test your own records and what to do when you find a problem.
What You Will Learn
- Explain how an HMRC customs compliance check works and who is liable when an agent files your declarations
- Build an audit trail from the commercial documents through to the declaration and payment, and keep records for the right period
- Check import declarations for classification, valuation, duty and import VAT errors
- Evidence preference claims on imports and statements on origin on exports
- Hold the proof of export that supports VAT zero-rating, including the three-month rule
- Show that a special procedure authorisation is run within its conditions, and know what HMRC checks on transit
- Understand how an error becomes a customs debt and a penalty, and when to disclose it
- Run a simple self-audit, handle an HMRC visit and apply it all in a practical mock audit exercise

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Preparing for a Customs Audit course cover?
It covers how an HMRC customs compliance check works, the records you need, how HMRC tests import and export declarations, origin and preference evidence, proof of export, special procedures, and what happens when HMRC finds an error. You finish with a practical mock audit.
Is this course suitable for beginners?
The course stands alone, so you do not need to have attended another customs course. It suits people who already handle imports or exports and want to check that their records would stand up to HMRC. If you are new to customs, our Export Documentation or Customs Procedures courses are a better starting point.
Do I need this course if a broker or forwarder files my declarations?
Yes. Your broker files what your documents tell it, and HMRC can pursue the importer. You need to know what your agent files and hold the supporting records yourself.
Does the course cover exports as well as imports?
Yes. Imports take the larger share because that is where duty and import VAT are charged. The course also covers proof of export for VAT zero-rating, origin statements on exports and special procedures.
Can this course be delivered privately for our team?
Yes. Contact us for group or bespoke pricing and we’ll recommend the most effective format for your team.
